Your best resource is your professor. They can answer questions, suggest great learning resources like videos and websites, connect you with classmates, and guide you through your course.

Course Modalities

The fall 2020 semester is going to look a little different. We're committed to your health, safety, and high-quality education. Check out this video to see how classes will operate this fall.

Classes are starting soon and one question many students have is how they will attend their virtual classes.

Your professor will reach out to you, either by email or Blackboard, regarding how to attend your virtual class. This includes classes that are labeled as Online Synchronous Remote and Face-To-Face Switch (standard Online classes, sections 90/91/92/93, do not have a designated meeting time).

Virtual classes will either take place on Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) or Zoom. To get started, be sure to download the following client software to your device:

MS Teams app: http://teams.microsoft.com/download
Zoom app (plugin for Microsoft Outlook): https://zoom.us/download

Instructional videos will be shared soon!

Best Practices for Online Learning

  • Treat online work like a job or a face-to-face class by scheduling time to work on it each day.
  • Have a dedicated study space that is quiet, organized, distraction-free, and available for use at any time.
  • Create a study plan to make the course more productive and less stressful.
  • Communicate with your teacher on a weekly basis via email or by phone, and ask questions.
  • Stay organized and save files for the course in the same folder on a cloud service with a recognizable name.
  • Use a calendar to schedule reminders for assignment due dates.
  • Participate actively! Complete your assignments on time, with your best work.
  • Check your campus email every day.
  • Make a copy of your answers for EVERYTHING you turn in except for online tests and quizzes.
  • Download any documents or files that you want to have access to offline.

Tutoring Online

All Garrett College students have access to a variety of free and high-quality tutoring options. Tutoring is effectively delivered by trained peer and professional tutors through face-to-face visits to the Tutoring center, video chat, email, phone call, and even text message. Students should visit the AASC Student Resources Blackboard course for the latest and most up-to-date information on tutoring options. The Tutoring Center is scheduled to open September 28th for the fall 2020 semester. Students may call 301-387-3715 or email aasc@garrettcollege.edu for details.

Note-Taking for Online Classes

Online students receive much of their course's information through reading and posts, so note-taking skills become invaluable in online learning. Below find some great resources into better note-taking practices.

Online Learning in STEM Courses

Build a Study Plan Online Learning

  • Plan ahead
Never wait until the day before an assignment due date to start working on it. Use time management skills to lessen stress.
  • Have an effective calendar system
Online learning needs structure; create a study calendar to help remember all important dates.
  • Create to-do lists
At the start of each week, make a to-do list of the tasks you need to complete by the end of the week.
  • Set time limits
Using the Pomodoro technique in time management to enhance your motivation and focus.
  • Stay on schedule
Finally, stick to your study plan. Procrastination is the worst enemy of online learners. If you are having difficulties submitting your assignments on time, contact your instructor.
