Welcome to Tutor Training

Congratulations and welcome to Tutor Training!

This LibGuide will serve as your introductory tutor training with the purpose of on-boarding you to the Garrett College tutoring program as well as providing you with the required knowledge and resources to be a successful tutor.

This training is mandatory for new Peer Tutors (students) and highly recommended for Professional Tutors (staff).

  2. Study the material presented on each page, including all links, text, and videos.
  3. Complete the Quiz in the last tab.

Peer Tutor Job Description

  • Be a currently enrolled Garrett College student.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Have successfully completed course(s) to tutor with a grade of B or higher.
  • Obtain one recommendation from a faculty member (must obtain recommendation from faculty member teaching that specific course if currently enrolled).  
  • Possess a genuine willingness to help others.
  • Work well with diverse groups of students.
  • Utilize refined communication skills.
  • Complete required workstudy application, training, meetings, and any additional materials required to evaluate student’s effectiveness as a tutor.
  • Work on a one-on-one basis or in small groups of up to six students.
  • Help students evaluate their own work by assisting them in analyzing areas that can be improved:
  • Organization of study materials,
  • Time management,
  • Study methods,
  • Interpretation of assignments,
  • Understanding course content: principles, terminology, procedures, etc.,
  • Basic academic skills: grammar, calculations, etc.
  • Attend all scheduled sessions and plan for sessions in advance based on student’s needs.
  • Be a positive academic role model and mentor.
  • Adhere to the Association of Tutoring Professionals Code of Ethics, as well as the Garrett College policies, procedures, and principles.
  • Attend tutor meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • Accurately maintain and submit timesheet and complete all required evaluation materials for program.
  • Maintain a positive, professional attitude toward the job and students.
