Embracing Diversity: Race & Ethnicity

Key Terms

Discrimination is the intended or accomplished differential treatment of persons or social groups for reasons of certain generalized traits.
Ethnicity is the culture of people in a given geographic region, including their language, heritage, religion and customs.

Race is the concept of dividing people into groups on the basis of various sets of physical characteristics and the process of ascribing social meaning to those groups.

Racism is the belief that humans may be divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called “races”; that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural and behavioral features; and that some races are innately superior to others.
