Math Refresher: Absolute Value

Math Refresher

Title

Into to Absolute Values

Absolute value uses two vertical lines to represent the positive quantity of a number between the lines. For example, l-5l = 5 and l6l = 6. An example of an equation involving an absolute value sign looks like this: lx-5l=2. It can be solved by finding the numbers that will satisfy x-5=2 and x-5=-2, since l2l=2 and l-2l=2. Once we do this, we find that our solutions are 7 and 3.
