FRACTIONS
Fractions are also known as rational numbers. They consist of three parts: a numerator (the top number), a denominator (the bottom number), and a fraction bar (the line separating the top and bottom). Think of the fraction bar as a division symbol, dividing the numerator by the denominator. The numerator and denominator are both integers. Integers include the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, ...}, the opposites of the counting numbers {-1, -2, -3, -4, ...}, and zero. Since you can't divide by zero, the denominator of a fraction cannot be equal to zero.
A mixed number consists of a positive or negative integer and a fraction.
An improper fraction occurs when the numerator is larger than the denominator.
