Indigenous Peoples of Garrett County: Monongahela

A special collection of physical and digital resources documenting the indigenous peoples of Garrett and its surrounding counties

Monogahela

The Monongahela people were a Native American culture that thrived in the upper Ohio River Valley, primarily in present-day Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, from 1050 to 1635 AD. Known for their fortified villages, distinctive pottery, and agricultural practices, they played a key role in regional trade. While their culture declined before European contact, the region later became significant in the French and Indian War, including the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755. Explore this collection to learn more about the Monongahela people and their enduring legacy.
