All tutoring sessions consist of the following four components:
-
- Ensure that you are on time and your working environment is set up in a way that is conducive to tutoring.
- Have your materials ready (books, paper, pencils, laptop, whiteboard, table).
- Start your shift with a positive attitude.
-
- Start the session by greeting the student in a friendly way.
- Introduce yourself and invite the student to do the same.
- Build rapport by asking ice breaking questions.
- Set the agenda for the session early.
- Discuss and set goals with your tutee (what would they like to accomplish during this session, goals for the semester).
-
- Ensure that you accomplish most of the goals for the session.
- Stay on task.
- Encourage the student during the session, but do not give false hope.
- Draw student's attention to his/her strengths and focus energies on developing areas in need of growth.
-
- Trust your instincts on when to end the session.
- Close on a positive note, with review of accomplishments and plans for any follow up sessions.
- Encourage the student to continue to utilize tutoring services.
