Tutor Training: Virtual

Tutor Training

Tutoring in a Virtual Environment

Traditional tutoring occurs in a face-to-face format. Flexible tutoring options phone call, email, video chat, instant chat, and text message. These methods can bring unexpected challenges, such as: lack of engagement, academic integrity, delayed or poor communication, lack of context, and more.

All tutoring sessions consist of the following four components:

  • Ensure you have a distraction free and professional working environment at home (warn your roommates, clean up your space, dress appropriately for video).
  • Know the limitations of your tools (wifi or internet connectivity, laptop).
  • Have your materials ready (student tracking log, email, tutoring platform such as zoom).
  • Start your shift with a positive attitude.
  • Discuss the different virtual tutoring options with your tutee (phone call, instant chat, text message, email, video chat).
  • Start the session by greeting the student in a friendly way.
  • Introduce yourself and invite the student to do the same.
  • Build rapport by asking ice breaking questions.
  • Set the agenda for the session early.
  • Discuss and set goals with your tutee (what would they like to accomplish during this session, goals for the semester).

  • Ensure that you accomplish most of the goals for the session.
  • Stay on task - check in periodically with the student to keep them engaged or ask if they need a short break.
  • Encourage the student during the session, but do not give false hope.
  • Draw student's attention to his/her strengths and focus energies on developing areas in need of growth.

  • Trust your instincts on when to end the session.
  • Close on a positive note, with review of accomplishments and plans for any follow up sessions.
  • Sent a follow-up email outlining what was accomplished during the session.
  • Encourage the student to continue to utilize tutoring services.
