Suggested strategies for use during session:

  • Practice active listening.
  • Ask questions: open-ended questions and clarifying questions to get students to talk in own words.
  • Practice/repetition:
  • Modeling: demonstrate how to do something
  • Guided practice: do task with student
  • Have students practice skill
  • Rewriting/rewording:  have student explain concepts to you in their own words.
  • Assist student with chunking/organizing information to aid memory and understanding.
  • Try to connect information to what student already knows.
  • Use memory devices-songs, phrases, acronyms.
  • Make use of tools/techniques that appeal to student’s learning style(s)/preferences.
  • Use textbook and other class materials as support (use questions at end of chapter, visit online sites with students).
