Suggested strategies for use during session:
- Practice active listening.
- Ask questions: open-ended questions and clarifying questions to get students to talk in own words.
- Practice/repetition:
- Modeling: demonstrate how to do something
- Guided practice: do task with student
- Have students practice skill
- Rewriting/rewording: have student explain concepts to you in their own words.
- Assist student with chunking/organizing information to aid memory and understanding.
- Try to connect information to what student already knows.
- Use memory devices-songs, phrases, acronyms.
- Make use of tools/techniques that appeal to student’s learning style(s)/preferences.
- Use textbook and other class materials as support (use questions at end of chapter, visit online sites with students).
