The Structure of Data

This section discusses how to identify the variable in a data set. 

Vocabulary

Case - unit that you are getting information for

Variable - any characteristic that is recorded for each case. They generally correspond to the columns in a data table.

Categorical variable - divides the cases into groups and places them into a category.

Quantitative variable - gives a numerical quantity for each case.

Explanatory variable - used to predict the value of another variable.

Response variable - the variable that is predicted by the explanatory variable.
