MAT 210: Introductory Statistics: Measures of Center

Measures of Center

This section covers how to find the center of a distribution.

There are two sets of videos and practice, so make sure you review both of them.

Vocabulary

Mean - the average of all of the data. It is found by adding up all of the values and dividing by the number of values.

Median - the middle of the list of values. It is found by putting the values in order and finding the one in the middle. If there are an even number of entries, you will not have a single middle number, so you would add the two middle numbers and divide the answer by two.

Resistance - whether the statistic is affected by extreme values. The median is resistant (not affected), and the mean is not resistant (is affected)
